I'm John Hocking, and I built AI Tool Critic because I got tired of AI “reviews” that were really just affiliate funnels in disguise.
Every tool on this site has been tested by me — one person, doing real work — with no vendor payments, no sponsored conclusions, and no softening of bad results to protect a commission.
What Makes AI Tool Critic Different
Why I Built This
I started AI Tool Critic in 2023 after spending too much time and money testing AI tools that didn't live up to their claims. Every week there was a new tool claiming to be revolutionary. Most of them weren't. A few of them genuinely were. But the reviews I found online were either surface-level listicles or transparently written to drive affiliate clicks — not to help me make a real decision.
So I started keeping my own records. What I tested, how it actually performed, who it made sense for, and whether the pricing was honest. That personal log turned into a structured review site, a free tools collection, and eventually a growing library of practical guides for people who use AI as part of their real work.
A note on affiliate links. Some links on this site earn me a small commission if you buy — at no extra cost to you. That's how the site is funded. But it never determines the outcome of a review. If a tool isn't worth it, I say so. If anything, I hold affiliated tools to a higher standard because my credibility is worth more than any individual commission.
What You'll Find Here
Honest, hands-on AI tool reviews. Tested by me, written for people making real decisions. Every review covers what a tool does well, where it fails, who it's actually for, and whether the price is justified. Browse the AI Tool Reviews or find something specific in the AI Tool Master List.
Free browser-based AI tools. I build practical utilities for people who use AI daily — no account required, no data uploaded, everything runs in your browser. The current collection includes a custom instructions generator, an AI hallucination checker, and a JSON repair and data format converter.
Practical guides and training. Beyond reviews, I publish step-by-step guides for getting better results from AI tools — covering prompting, workflow design, and how to evaluate AI output before you rely on it. Start with the Training section.
How I Review AI Tools
Every review follows the same process:
✅ I test for the use case the tool is actually marketed for — not a contrived edge case
✅ I pay for my own subscriptions where needed
✅ I cover pricing honestly — including where the paywalls get frustrating
✅ Limitations get at least as much attention as features
✅ Every review ends with a clear verdict: who this is actually for and whether it's worth the money
✅ Reviews are updated when tools meaningfully change — not left to go stale
What I don't do: accept payment for reviews, publish sponsored content dressed as editorial, or soften conclusions because a vendor pushed back. The AI tool space has a trust problem — too many “review” sites are just affiliate funnels with a thin editorial layer. I'm trying to be genuinely useful instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does AI Tool Critic make money?
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you purchase a tool through one of those links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That's how the site is funded. It never influences what I write — if a tool isn't worth it, I say so, commission or no commission.
Do you accept payment for reviews?
No. I don't accept payment for reviews, placements, or positive coverage. Every review is based on my own hands-on testing.
How often are reviews updated?
AI tools change quickly, sometimes dramatically. I update reviews when something significant changes — features, pricing, or quality. The date on each post shows when it was last checked. If you spot something that's out of date, let me know.
Can I suggest a tool for review?
Yes. If there's a tool you'd like me to look at, or a comparison that would be useful, reach out at john@aitoolcritic.com. I read everything, though I can't promise a specific timeline.
How can I get in touch?
Email is the best way: john@aitoolcritic.com. You can also use the contact page. I respond to all genuine messages.
